I could literally just watch this for hours
This Summer, during a month’s work experience at a zoo, I worked with a clan of spotted hyenas. I didn’t know a great deal about the species prior to this, and like most people my age I grew up with my Lion King video on repeat in my lounge! I couldn’t help but remember the cackling, buffoons from the film I grew up with when I first saw the group in their enclosure. However, by the end of my stint at the zoo I was so fascinated by them I couldn’t understand how I had never paid them attention before! I loved the fact the females are dominant. The group dynamics were really interesting, especially as there was a cub just a few months old (bloody adorable too). I could have quite happily sat all day watching them. The gentleness of them all (particularly the young males) was remarkable. When told I could hand feed a hyena chunks of meat I was a bit dubious, I worried for my hands a fair bit. I didn’t realise they would be gentler than my own dog and cat at home! They are also absolutely beautiful. Big satellite dish ears, sad dark eyes and gorgeous spotted coat.
Basically, through all of my ramblings, hyenas are great and everyone should meet one.
